Utilization Review has been having trouble getting reimbursement for our hospital when we admit pregnant diabetics for blood sugar control.  Please make sure that your admission and progress notes fully discuss: all medical problems that we are addressing, the need for tight blood sugar control, AND that one of our reasons for admission is to protect fetal health and reduce fetal jeopardy from poorly controlled diabetes.

7/8/08:  Residents Advisory Committee Meeting Update

If you have any concerns or issues you think are appropriate for discussion amongst all ARMC residents, please feel free to approach either Julia Burke or Kristy Roloff. We would be happy to represent your concern or request at the meeting.

1. Research: We will be approaching OMEC to request greater support for resident driven research. The annual research day held last month was a great success, however, #'s of submissions were down. Remember that all research may be submitted in poster form for research day! Now is the time to get started.

2. ARMC journal: residents are requested to submit articles for this quarterly bulletin. You may present an interesting case, research abstracts or papers, or other relevant feature. Yes, you can include this as a publication for your resume!

3. The RAC is working on a proposal to get funding for a resident 'international medicine trip abroad' to provide medical services in a developing nation. If you are interested in participating in this project, contact me! (kristyroloff@gmail.com)

4. The AOA inspection will be happening soon, although the exact date is still unknown. A copy of the Performance Improvement Activities Summary for AOA Preparation is saved on the Welcome Page of New Innovations. It lists various things that were done to improve patient care and/or outcomes at ARMC in the past year.

5. A clinical emergency must be delt with RIGHT AWAY. An urgent request should be delt with in 24 hours.

6. Reminder - you must attend 60 hours of lecture to be eligible for your clinical stipend ($700 reimbursed for educational activities - books, conferences etc...)

7. Sign up for House Staff Association now! Member ship fees are $35 and can be submitted to president of HSA Paul Wisnewski (PGY-4 G surg).

8. We will be analyzing the cafeteria food price increase and possibly requesting an increase in stipend for food. Our stipend did not increase when the cafeteria increased their prices.

Every year, $1000.00 is awarded to one OB/GYN Resident for Excellence in Poster Presentation. The Award Application can be found online at MEFACOOG’s website, www.mefacoog.org. This easily accessible site allows residents to cut-and-paste their abstracts into the Online Award Application. The deadline for submission is November 15, 2008.

The MEFACOOG Excellence in Poster Presentation Award comes with an honorarium of $1,000, generously funded by Bayer Healthcare. ACOOG also publishes the winning poster in the ACOOG End of the Year Report and the MEFACOOG website. The posters are showcased at the Spring Annual ACOOG Conference.

As recipient of the 2007 Award, I would like to encourage all Ob/Gyn Residents to apply! I really appreciate the award that I received. This was a wonderful experience that supported my professional growth! Thank you, MEFACOOG and Bayer!

ACOOG/Ortho-Women's Health & Urology Resident Thesis Award Not Given for 2007!

Unfortunately, no resident research was found worthy of this $2,500 award! I would like to encourage all Ob/Gyn Residents to apply for ACOOG’s research awards for the 2008 application cycle. The application and deadlines are posted at www.acoog.org.

UPDATE 2/8/08

1.  Duty hour violations: After a 24 hour shift you must use 'transfer of care'. You may finish operating on a case you've already begun (don't start new surgical cases - sign them out). Do NOT see new patients. Do NOT do discharges. The additional 6 hours is for transfer of care only. Between shifts the AOA requires a 'reasonable' number of hours break. This colloquially means about 10 hours between 12 hour shifts. It is NOT an hours violation if your break is less than 10 hours.

2. They are going to be adding a comfortable couch to the ARMC resident lounge.

3. The ARMC cafe will be reopening at night. They are also working on getting the coffee clatch open from midnight - 3 am. If they are open please support them! They will be serving sandwiches and light fare.

4. We are initiating a project to do a medical mission, overseas possibly (location hasn't been determined). We are planning on securing some funding for this exciting project. If you are interested in assisting with organizing and planning, please get in touch with Dr. Roloff.

8/21/07 Update

Warning!  CNN just posted an article: "When to Fire your Doctor!" Check it out!

http://www.cnn.com/2007/HEALTH/08/16/ep.fire.your.doc/index.html

July 2007 REMINDER:

All residents must do an online evaluation of their residency program at the end of each training year. If you have not already done so, please go the ACOOG website at ACOOG.org. From there, click on "Education", then "Residency Program", then "Resident Online Evaluations".  Please remember that approval of your prior year's training is dependent upon the completion of this eval!

7/5/07 Updates!

The NEW DUTY HOURS website is http://www.new-innov.com/!

Once you get there, click on "client login". This is where you will enter ARMC(make sure this is uppercase). Next you will be asked for your username and password. According to the GME office, these both should be your first initial and your last name (must be in lowercase letters). Once you log-in for the first time, you can change your password.

Per Dr. Miulli, continuing residents should begin reporting their hours as of July 1. Intern hours should begin June 24. The only thing that New Innovations will NOT be used for is evaluations. Procedures and hours should be logged into this system. Interns must also log their procedures into the ACOOG website.

Myevaluations.com will still be used for evaluations!
